IPL 2025: Gujarat Titans Clinch 36-Run Victory Over Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad

The Gujarat Titans claimed a comprehensive 36-run win over the Mumbai Indians in a high-energy clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium, marking a strong start to their 2025 IPL campaign. This performance showcased Gujarat’s strength with both bat and ball, while exposing Mumbai’s continuing struggles early in the season.

Dominant Batting Display by Gujarat Titans

Batting first after Gujarat Titans won the toss, they capitalized on ideal batting conditions. Openers Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill laid a solid base with an 78-run partnership. Sudharsan set the tone with a smooth 63 off 41 balls, marked by four boundaries and two sixes. Gill contributed a useful support role with 38 off 27.

Jos Buttler contributed useful runs in the middle order with a 39 from 24 balls at a fair clip, injecting pace at the very moment the innings required it. The Titans were able to amass a challenging total of 196/8 even after losing a couple of wickets in the last stages. Sherfane Rutherford and Rashid Khan contributed in terms of quick runs to enable their side to score strongly.

From Mumbai’s bowling unit, skipper Hardik Pandya was the most effective, taking 2 wickets for 29 runs in his spell. However, most bowlers struggled to contain Gujarat’s aggressive intent, especially during the powerplay and death overs.

Mumbai’s Inconsistent Batting Continues

Pursuing 197, Mumbai Indians were off to a wobbly start with Mohammed Siraj striking twice early, dismissing Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton cheaply. At 35/2, the pressure was on soon.

Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav attempted to stabilize the innings. The two added 62 runs between them, with Varma scoring 39 from 36 balls and Yadav scoring top with a blazing 48 off 28 balls, including four huge sixes.

But the removal of Varma in the middle of the innings turned the game in favor of Gujarat once again. Prasidh Krishna bowled a neat spell, giving away only 18 runs in his four overs while taking a vital wicket. Siraj finished with 2/34, playing a key role in restricting Mumbai.

Middle and lower order could not push the rate, and Mumbai Indians ended up at 160/6, short of the mark. It was their second loss in a row in the season.

Match Highlights:

Sai Sudharsan (GT): Helped stabilize the innings with a crucial 63 off 41

Shubman Gill (GT): Established the tone with a 27-ball 38

Prasidh Krishna (GT): Frugal and effective with 2/18

Mohammed Siraj (GT): Claimed important wickets at the top of the innings

Suryakumar Yadav (MI): Highest scorer for Mumbai with a gallant 48

Reactions and Future Outlook

Post-match, Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya accepted that his team’s batting order had to improve. He complimented the openers of Gujarat for subjecting his bowlers to pressure at the beginning of the innings, which became the turning point in determining the result.

The victory placed Gujarat Titans in a good position on the points table, boosting their morale. For Mumbai, who are now at the bottom of the table, they will need urgent improvement if they are to remain in playoff contention.

As the tournament went on, both franchises would be seeking momentum — Gujarat looking to capitalise on their success at the beginning, and Mumbai hoping to recover from their early failures.
