New Delhi, May 11, 2025 — The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Sunday made a strong statement condemning Pakistan for committing a “severe and deliberate violation” of the newly announced ceasefire pact along the Line of Control (LoC). The statement comes in the aftermath of a string of incidents in the last 48 hours involving cross-LoC shelling, drone violations, and suspected attempts at infiltration.
“Ceasefire agreement was intended to ease tensions and avoid loss of human life on both sides,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a press briefing. “Instead, the Pakistani side has decided to disregard the intent and letter of the agreement. In reaction, our armed forces have been accorded complete freedom to retaliate strongly and effectively.”
The violation has come on the heels of the shaky ceasefire agreement announced after tensions in Jammu and Kashmir escalated. India had launched targeted attacks on terror launchpads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir under Operation Sindoor. The ceasefire was to avert further escalation, but the Indian government asserts that the latest actions across the border have proved that Pakistan was not committed to peace.
As per defence sources, there was shelling and drone presence in several sectors along the LoC, namely Poonch, Rajouri, and Kupwara. In a few instances, firing from small arms was also heard, which triggered Indian forces into retaliatory fire.
“Our forces are highly vigilant, and any further aggression will be countered with even more vigorous responses,” a high-ranking army spokesman said in a media interview. “We do not want conflict, but any hostility will be met with clarity and firmness of response.”
The MEA made it clear that even though India is committed to peace and stability in the region, there are patience limits to the country. “Peace cannot be a one-way commitment,” the MEA asserted. “Pakistan needs to be held accountable for any move that puts Indian citizens and soldiers’ lives at risk.”
In the meantime, diplomatic sources have confirmed that India has brought the matter to the notice of important global partners, including the United States and the United Nations. New Delhi has presented evidence of ceasefire violations and has called upon the international community to take cognizance of Pakistan’s actions.
Political responses in India too have been quick. Politicians from all parties showed support to the armed forces and called for a robust diplomatic response. “India desires peace, but not in exchange for its sovereignty and security,” BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said. Opposition politicians like Congress MP Rahul Gandhi made similar comments while calling on the government to apprise Parliament of developments.
As the tensions remain unabated, Indian security agencies stay on alert, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir’s sensitive areas. Intelligence sources have indicated potential for higher infiltration attempts in the days ahead, further complicating the scenario.
