Lucknow, 11 May 2025 — In his first public comments after the launch of Operation Sindoor, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh firmly came out in support of the Indian Army’s cross-border action as a “siddha sambodh” or “a necessary message” to Pakistan in the face of heightened tensions along the Line of Control (LoC). Addressing a public gathering in Lucknow on Sunday, Singh declared India’s action proportionate, warranted, and directed exclusively against toppling terror infrastructure endangering national security.
“India desires peace, but we will not be shy to hit back hard if we are attacked,” Singh said. “Operation Sindoor was not only a military retaliation; it was an unambiguous indication that India would not allow itself to be attacked on its territory. This was a message needed.”
Context of Escalating Tensions
His remarks were made just days after India and Pakistan signed a ceasefire on May 10, following an intense upsurge in fighting in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army conducted Operation Sindoor as a revenge for a lethal terror strike at Pahalgam that killed several security personnel and civilians. The operation is said to have targeted some terrorist launchpads and key assets along the LoC.
Despite the ceasefire, instances of drone intrusions and blasts in the Valley have been going on, putting into question the sustainability of the truce.
“Ceasefire Doesn’t Mean Silence Against Terror”
In his speech, Singh underscored that even as India is committed to the ceasefire, it is not a sign of weakness in the face of terrorism. “Ceasefire must not be interpreted as weakness. We will take action against each act of terrorism with all strength. Our message is simple: You have the option to go for peace or suffer consequences.”
Praise for Indian Forces
The Defence Minister also complimented the Indian Army, Air Force, and intelligence units for the prompt coordination displayed in Operation Sindoor. “The courage and accuracy demonstrated by our armed forces again reaffirm that India is absolutely capable of safeguarding its sovereignty,” he said. “I pay tributes to our troops who executed the operation with courage and discipline.”
Political Consensus and Public Support
Singh called for national solidarity during the increasing geopolitical tension. “Today, what the nation needs is not political one-upmanship, but collective determination. The nation is behind the armed forces. We would expect the same of our political parties,” he said.
India’s Strong Stance on Diplomacy and Security
Rajnath Singh reaffirmed India’s twin strategy of strategic restraint and strong response. “We are willing to talk, but we will never compromise on sovereignty or let citizens’ lives come under threat,” he stated.
Singh’s statement follows as global players, such as the United States and China, continue to call for restraint and persuade both sides to keep the peace. India, however, has continued to insist that future acts of terror will be addressed as acts of war, irrespective of any existing ceasefire.
