Senior lawyer and Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal has responded sharply to the latest India-Pakistan ceasefire, demanding transparency from the government and more accountability from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In his speech, Sibal averred that though the Indian Army‘s swift and prompt response to terrorism needs national endorsement and applause, serious doubts regarding the abrupt announcement of the ceasefire remain. “The whole nation is solidly with our soldiers. Their pinpoint strikes on terror dens demonstrate their gallantry and professionalism. But while all this was happening, one must wonder—how did the ceasefire suddenly emerge?” he questioned.
Demands for Parliament Session and PM‘s Reaction
Sibal insisted that the government hold a special session of Parliament, terming it important given the prevailing sensitive national mood. He also expressed concern over Prime Minister Modi’s failure to visit Pahalgam, where there was a recent terror attack, and wondered, “Why didn‘t the Prime Minister go to Pahalgam? Why are these questions not being answered?”
Comparing with other world leaders, Sibal said, “In America, the President answers and meets the media regularly. But here, when the country demands answers, there is silence. Why is that?”
Seeks Clarity on U.S. Involvement and Ceasefire Terms
On reports of American participation in backchannel discussions or exchanges pertaining to the ceasefire, Sibal observed that the Indian people are kept in the dark. “What were the discussions with the U.S.? How did they intervene? Nothing has been communicated to the people.
He also questioned the reported plans for a meeting between India and Pakistan‘s DGMOs. “Both countries are nuclear powers and cannot afford to make mistakes. Clarity and transparency are essential.”
All-Party Meeting Demanded
At last, Sibal called on the Centre to summon an all-party meeting in which the Prime Minister can brief the opposition and the country personally. “The people of India should know the whole story. The Prime Minister needs to come forward and tell.
